New Demonstrations Erupt in Kenya Over Planned US-Backed Ebola Center

(MENAFN) Fresh unrest broke out Tuesday in the Kenyan town of Nanyuki as residents protested against the construction of a US-supported Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base, leading to clashes with police and multiple arrests.

According to reports, anti-riot officers deployed tear gas to disperse crowds attempting to march toward the site. Several demonstrators were detained during the operation as tensions escalated throughout parts of the town.

Commercial activity was disrupted as numerous businesses closed their doors amid the protests.

Thick tear gas spread across nearby streets and public areas, including a mosque, forcing protesters to scatter through surrounding neighborhoods and business districts.

Speaking to reporters, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua said local authorities and community leaders had not been informed about the project before construction commenced. He expressed concerns regarding a lack of transparency and insufficient consultation with residents.

Kinyua stated that county officials, elected representatives and the county administration only became aware of the project after construction work had already started.

Residents and local leaders have pledged to continue their opposition to the facility, arguing that it could negatively affect public safety, tourism and local economic activity. Protesters also accused authorities of disregarding community objections and failing to respect a court order that had suspended the project, according to reports.

The facility is being built at Laikipia Air Base, located approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Nanyuki, a town situated about 200 kilometers (124 miles) north of Nairobi.
