CCTV Shows Students Set Fire That Kills Sixteen Schoolgirls in Kenya
According to reports, Kenya's interior cabinet secretary said he personally reviewed CCTV recordings collected by investigators and described the footage as deeply distressing.
“I was reviewing the CCTV footage of Utumishi Academy, and I felt very sad. I even struggled to sleep, because we could see the kids who were coming to light the fire,” Murkomen said.
The investigation is focused on the fire that swept through a dormitory at Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School in Gilgil, located in Nakuru County. Authorities are examining the incident as a suspected case of arson.
Reports indicate that eight students have already been taken into custody as investigators continue gathering evidence and determining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Murkomen said the footage appears to show students entering the dormitory before starting the fire, despite being aware that other students were sleeping inside at the time.
The case has shocked the country and intensified scrutiny of safety measures in boarding schools, while investigators work to establish the full sequence of events and any potential criminal responsibility connected to the deadly blaze.
